The black box theatre Presents

INSTANT SONGWRITING

WORKSHOP

with Brothers and Sons

Friday, 24 June, 2022 @ 2:00 PM

The talented fringe-nominated creators of Brothers and Sons, Liz Butler and Ben Jardine, are bringing their special mix of improvisation, comedy and music to Kerikeri, and they’re going to show you how you can do it to!

This workshop will cover the art of instant songwriting: taking a word or idea and writing a song about it, right there in the moment.

We’ll cover cognitive tricks to come up with lyric ideas, rhyme techniques, song structure, types of songs, and more.

We will provide background music for attendees to practice with during the workshop that they will continue to have access to so they may continue to polish their newfound skills.

The attendees will have the opportunity to perform songs at the end of the workshop to have the experience of sharing their new skills in front of a group as well.

Participants will leave knowing that instant songwriting is an empowering and entertaining way to create something out of thin air, and a skill that is transferable to many different contexts.

Liz and Ben have been making up songs together since they first met in 2019. They fell in love, and connected through their love of music, improv, and spontaneity.

This is the first time the dynamic duo have taken their show and workshop on the road! Black Box Theatre is proud and excited to be a part of the first Aotearoa Tour and to be able to host their special workshop!

Here’s a snippet of what audiences have said about their improvised musical comedy show to date…

“Butler and Jardine are two masters of musical improv whose chemistry and cleverness leap off the stage. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed an improv show more, and I’ve seen Whose Line is it Anyway? live.” – Regional News

“I could watch [Butler and Jardine] simply sit in an empty room and I would feel privileged to be there.” – Art Murmurs
